BREWERY WASTEWATER 101

INTRODUCTION

Are you fired up, ready to learn about brewery wastewater?

Generally speaking, brewery wastewater has a few common characteristics:

  • High in sugar
  • High in alcohol
  • Potentially high in solids
  • High temperature
  • Highly variable pH

* The terms ‘high’ and ‘low’ are relative to regular domestic wastewater that most municipal treatment plants were designed to treat.

Hard to believe, but I’ve been doing wastewater in general since 1996, and brewery wastewater specifically since 1998. There was a 3 year break in there as I rode a bicycle halfway around the world with my future wife and then took some time to get my feet back under me. That trip was in 2010 and 2011 and I’m happy to say it still has a wonderful impact on our day to day lives.
